Background

Soph Smith (they/them) is a queer visual artist currently based in Tucson, Arizona. They recently received their Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Studio Art with a concentration in painting from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. They graduated cum laude with a 3.74 GPA. 

 

In addition to the visual arts, Soph also takes an interest in costume design. They contributed to ten Skidmore Theater productions as an assistant and costume designer for the Skidmore Costume Shop. Most recently, they costume designed the first staged production of The Place That Made You by Darcy Parker Bruce. 

 

In 2022, Soph completed an internship with the Luhring Augustine Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Their work was exhibited in the annual Juried Student Exhibition in the Schick Gallery at Skidmore College for three years in a row. Additionally, in the spring of 2022, their illustration work was selected for the Skidmore Academic Festival Junior Show in the Schick Gallery. In 2023, they were awarded the Van Dewater Memorial Award for their photography series Mixtape for my Lover. Recently, Soph exhibited their first multimedia installation in the 2023 Skidmore College Senior Thesis Exhibition at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum. Their work is currently being exhibited in the Annual Artlink Juried Exhibition at the FOUND:RE Hotel and Gallery in Phoenix, Arizona.
